The journal, stressing in its letter to Mr Séralini that there was no speak of fraud or unethical research. The decision was rather based on the fact that no firm conclusions could be drawn from the findings, something that was known all along. Normally, such grounds are never regarded sufficient to take such a drastic step. Normally only misbehaviour, redundant publications are listed as reasons to withdrawn publications in this journal.
Sofia Gatica, activist from Cordoba, Argentina, who appears in the film on this website testifying on the impact of RoundupReady soy crops grown around her community, was recently threatened and beaten up. These events followed a two month blockading action that started on September 19 in the city of Malvinas, on the site where Monsanto wants to build the largest GM maize seed producing plant in South America.
The lawsuit undertaken by citizen groups seeks to protect the “human right to save and use the agrobiodiversity of native landraces from the threats posed by GMO maize”, said one of its initiators. Since 2001, evidence of contamination of Mexico's native corn varieties by GM maize varieties (principally Monsanto's RoundupReady maize) has been documented.
Michael Hart, a conventional livestock family farmer, investigates the reality of farming genetically modified crops in the USA ten years after their introduction. He travels across the US, interviewing farmers and other specialists about their experiences of growing GM-crops. During the making of the film he heard problems of the ever increasing costs of seeds and chemicals to weeds becoming resistant to herbicides.
In short, the film shows US farmers urging great caution to be exercised by UK and European farmers in adopting this technology.
