On 11 July representatives of national governments will decide if the EU authorise imports of complex GM crops, called smartstax. That means that a Monsanto maize that produces 6 different toxins and resists herbicides glyphosate and glufosinate can enter our food chain.
Recent studies show significant effects on pig health fed with genetically modified maize. German organisation Testbiotech is of the opinion that the new publications make it necessary to stop the process of authorisation and has prepared a draft letter to Commissioner Borg. The member states vote but the European Commission decides about the agenda and has the power to send the maize back to the European Food Safety Agency for a new evaluation.
